November 14-18

Chemistry is finishing up Reactions and can expect a test on Friday. They will be doing a lab on Monday and Tuesday of next week. This is to keep them from having too many test right before Thanksgiving break. Thursday is club day of this week and I will be out of the classroom for a Science summit. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

November 7-11

This week chemistry is working on Reactions. They are writing skeletal equations, balancing equations and identifying reaction types. There is no school Tuesday, ACT prep in the gym on Wednesday and continuing reactions on Thursday and Friday. Hopefully they will start a lab on Friday. Progress reports go out on Wednesday. Please encourage your child to see me after school for extra help when needed! Have a great week.

October 10 - 14

Monday will consist of Molecular Shape notes and polarity. Tuesday the juniors will be taking the ASVAB. Students can expect a study guide toward the end of the week. Since club picture day is on Friday the test will not be on Friday.

Week 8

Monday students will be working in the Kaplan book again which is ACT prep. On Tuesday we will continue the chapter on chemical bonding with naming ionic compounds. I believe the juniors will be out on Wednesday for an Arts & Humanities field trip so we will start covalent bonding on Thursday. There will be a quiz on Tuesday over polyatomic ions and a quiz on Friday over covalent prefixes. The nine weeks ends on Friday and Fall Break begins.

Week 7

Students were given a study guide on Thursday, which is due tomorrow (Monday). We will go over the study guide and review for the test on The Periodic Table which will be on Tuesday. Wednesday is club day and clubs are scheduled to meet every period of the day. Thursday will begin the unit on Bonding. We will start out with Ionic Bonding and learning how to write ionic bonds on Thursday with a worksheet as homework and Friday we will incorporate transition metals and polyatomic ions into Ionic bonding.

Week 6

The students are working on The Periodic Table unit. Students will start Kaplan on Monday, which is an ACT Preparation program designed to enhance ACT scores and provide students with test taking stratagies. This week will consist of finishing up the unit, doing a lab on Wednesday and taking the last two quizzes over elements on Wednesday and Friday. With only three weeks left in this quarter, students are encouraged to get extra credit turned in as soon as possible.

Week 5

Students took the test over atomic structure on Friday. They will get those back and we will go over them on Tuesday. We will be starting the unit on the periodic table this week. Students will learn the history, how it is organized and patterns that appear on the table. Quizzes will be given this week on Wednesday and Friday as students memorize element symbols, names and location on the periodic table. Check the progress reports and give me a call!

Week 4

We have started atomic structure and electron configurations. The students have a small assignment due on Monday. We will review over the lesson from Friday and do the pre-lab for the Flame Test lab. The lab will be on Tuesday, study guide on Wednesday, review on Thursday and test on Friday....then we get a three day weekend..woohoo!

Week 3

Chemistry students recieved a study guide on Friday, which we will go over on Monday (Aug 22nd). We will have our first test over Matter, Mixtures, and Changes on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we will be starting the unit on Atomic Stucture. If all goes as planned, the students will have their first lab involving the bunsen burner on Friday. Students should dress accordingly for labs. I have uploaded more photos on the home page of the students performing "Is Carbon Dioxide Present?" lab. This lab was very simple and used to show one of the four indicators of a chemical reaction (they learned those this week) and a mini lesson on acids and bases. It will be another busy week. I know there is a volleyball game Monday night so encourage your child to take their study guide with them and study at the game! I will be there if they have any questions. Please email me or call me if you have any questions.

Week 2

This week students are learning about Matter and Mixtures. They will also be learning about Lab Safety and will be bringing home a Lab Safety Contract on Wednesday night to be signed by the parent or guardian. Please get these back as soon as possible in order for the student to participate in upcoming chemistry labs. In addition, they will be taking a lab safety quiz on Thursday and must score an 80% or higher before doing labs. They will be allowed to retake the quiz until they master an 80% score. Please check out the home page for a link to pictures and the Science Club page for information on Science Club. First test will be early next week and a study guide will be sent out before the test.

First Week

The first day was great. We went over Scientific Notation today and will be doing Significant Figures on Tuesday. Wednesday will consist of learning appropriate measurment techniques related to lab equipment. Thursday the students will rotate stations set up to test their measuring skills. On Friday, they will be learning how to write a lab report correctly and performing a mini lab.  Students should be bringing calculators, books and paper to class EVERY day!
